Promotion Director's Report

What a difference a season makes! The weather changes, home schedules change to accommodate education hours, and our program makes positive changes in our new look. So, here’s to the Edmonton Safe Parent Association, families, board, and supporters, who make this child-safety first program so visible and worthwhile.

Our name and logo changes will make us totally easy to identify. Many of you have met Spunky, our mascot. Children have learned that Spunky represents the safety of the program. Now, when they see the new signs in a window, they will easily make the association: “A Spunky house is a Safe Parent house!”

Children of all ages love to hug Spunky when he appears at events. Now, in Edmonton, Spunky will be in Safe Parent windows, as friendly on the sign as he is in person.

Elsewhere in this newsletter, our President, and Karen have outlined our thoughts on the reason for the change and how it will come about. We will need your cooperation to make the exchange of the signs as easy as possible. I have already spoken to Spunky and he agrees to be at the exchange sites.

It is exciting to once again be at the beginning of something new. Edmonton started the Block Parent program, but now the new name and look will influence other programs in the future. Again. And Spunky will be seen in windows of homes here to underline the importance of safety for children or others that need help in an emergency.

I have been invited by day care programs to talk to young children about their safety. Children are generally alert and many parents have already instilled the safety education. A visit to these young persons is energizing. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and their questions and stories help me keep focused on how young people see the world, and how they can be fooled.

These children are why we are here. The Edmonton Safe Parent Association has only one focus: to keep our children safe, anywhere in the city, any time of day or night. So show your enthusiasm for this program. Help with the sign exchange, ask for stickers or other items that show who you are, encourage your school or child care facility to invite us in to underline the fact: child safety is our motto, and a Spunky house is a Safe Parent House.

Looking forward to seeing you soon at a sign exchange, school, or an event!
